Estimators for the dispersion parameter of a distribution

Estimators for the dispersion parameter and their properties and assumptions.

Estimator	Purpose
Standard deviation	Estimate the population standard deviation using the sample standard deviation estimator. The sample standard deviation is a biased estimator of the population standard deviation.
Variance	Estimate the population variance using the sample variance estimator. The sample variance is an unbiased estimator of the population variance.
