Testing equivalence of means (independent samples)
Test if there is equivalence of the means of two independent samples.
- Select a cell in the dataset.
-
On the Analyse-it ribbon tab, in the
Statistical Analyses group, click
Compare Groups, and then click
TOST hypothesis test.
The analysis task pane opens.
- In the Y drop-down list, select the quantitative response variable.
- In the X drop-down list, select the categorical factor variable identifying the groups.
-
In the Test drop-down list, select either
Student's t or Welch t
depending on the homogeneity of variances.
The TOST equivalence test is actually specified through the Hypotheses drop-down list, the Test drop-down list indicates the type of t-test to use.
- In the Equivalence interval edit boxes, type the lower and upper bounds of the equivalence interval. For example, type-5 to +5 if differences between the means of ±5 is the effect size considered to be practically the same.
- Optional: To compare the p-value against a predefined significance level, in the Significance level edit box, type the maximum probability of rejecting the null hypothesis when in fact it is true (typically 5% or 1%).
- Click Calculate.
